Intercultural Competencies

Successful communication depends on a lot more than having a shared language. Coaching packages for cross-cultural communication significantly enhance a company's ability to handle cross-cultural situations sensitively and effectively. Typically, such clients have to deal with other nationalities through correspondence, or in international teams, on business trips, or in extended stays abroad. During initial input relating to cross-cultural communication, cultural models and casework with specific nationalities or in international teams are studies are explored. The coaching element then builds on this by focussing on the specific context of the individual, enabling them to develop and implement effective strategies for cross-cultural communication.

 

The cross-cultural communication package helps clients who want to:

  • understand their own cultural perspectives
  • understand how they are viewed by other cultures
  • develop a framework for understanding other’s behaviour
  • work with specific nationalities or in international teams
  • relocate to different countries
  • use English for international communication
  • manage international operations with greater awareness

 

 

Previous Experience: Having lived in Japan and Italy (I am now resident in the UK), and having been responsible for managing and delivering training in business communication skills in an international environment, I have significant personal experience of the challenges of communicating in cross-cultural situations. Drawing from models of Hall, Hofstede,Trompenaars and others, I have delivered cross-cultural training to a broad group of clients including Birmingham Airport, Deutsche Post, GKN, Hewlett Packard, Hong Kong Shanghai Bank, Lever Brothers, London Stock Exchange, Manchester Airport, Ove Arup, Rolls Royce and Unilever, with speaking engagements at itf2001 (International Trade Forum), and at the Birmingham Chamber of Commerce. Recent projects include partnering with the University of Birmingham to deliver cultural awareness training to exporters in the region.
